Bring The Light

During this season of hope find out how true determination … and support from Metrolina Association for the Blind … can change life’s path in amazing ways.

Micah was in the 6th grade when he was diagnosed with a detached retina, which causes blurred vision and sometimes complete loss of sight. For Micah, he went from being fully sighted to blind in a matter of weeks.

Micah had to learn to navigate life without his sight. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t fair. And it didn’t happen overnight. But, with the support of Ian, an orientation and mobility specialist with Metrolina Association for the Blind, Micah learned to navigate middle school life as a blind person in a sighted world. He worked. He studied. He practiced. He shared his frustrations with Ian, and he had setbacks. Ian worked alongside Micah for 7 years.

Micah thrived in school, learned to play the drums, joined the school marching band, and lettered as a high school wrestler. After graduating from high school, he was accepted into a state university and did what so many sighted individuals do every single fall: he kissed his parents and went off to begin the next chapter.
